Dick Wittington

Dick Whittington

Joanna Hughes (Director), Ben Thompson( Musical Director) and Kirsty Purvis (Choreography) are proud to present a new version of Dick Whittington written by Damian Trasler, David Lovesy and Steve Clark. TLC Creative 2004.

A new version of the classic tale, brimming with comedy, slapstick and everything you would want and expect from a traditional family pantomime and of course plenty to keep the audience cheering and booing along!

Plot
King Rat is threatening to take over London. Only the penniless but brave Dick Whittington and his trusty feline sidekick, Tiddles, can stop the rodent’s quest for domination.

Aided by the magic of a very cockney Spirit of London, the more down to earth and questionable “help” of his mother, Dame Sarah, and his loyal but brainless pal, “Barrow Boy” Billy, Dick’s adventure takes him from the East End of London to distant tropical shores before the final showdown with the villainous King Rat and his henchrats, Nip and Tuck!

Along the way he attempts to win the hand of the lovely Alice, daughter of bumbling Alderman Fitzwarren and foil the plot of the mysterious, piratical Long John Tinfoil.

Will our hero triumph over these adversities, become Lord Mayor and live happily ever after?

Baptista: The father of Katherina and Bianca (playing age 40+) Principal role

The Suitors:

Lucentio: The classic Shakespearean ‘lover’.   (playing age 18+ and compatible with Bianca)  Principal role.
Hortensio      (playing age 18+)
Gremio          (playing age 50+)

The Servants
Grumio}    Petruchio, Hortensio and Lucentios servants can be played by any
Tranio }       age, any sex- they are supporting roles in terms of lines, but crucial
Biondello}   to the plot (and often have the most interesting things to do!)

Other Characters
Vincentio    Lucentio’s father

To hopefully put a few fears to rest, full support will be given to get into the Shakespearean mind-set- including extensive help with his use of language. In terms of casting we are very open minded with age, and most roles can be played extremely well by either sex.

This will not be a straight-laced Shakespearean performance; we need people who will be flexible and open-minded.

Unfortunately, we cannot cast anyone who will be under the age of 16 by the 14th of July.

If you want to audition and have any queries or cannot manage the dates above; contact Emma or Pat Hobday on:            07855 751 918/ 07973 837 988
If cast must be a member of the                                                                              Theatre by the first rehearsal
Hope to see you all there!
